Some have joked that the new president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, is like a tropical Donald Trump. He’s crass, outspoken and at times deeply offensive.

But what’s happening in the Philippines right now is far more serious. The drug war has introduced a wave of extrajudicial killings and a climate of lawlessness and fear.

One that has eerie echoes of the days of former president Marcos and the days of martial law.
