Some have joked that the new president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, is like a tropical Donald Trump. He’s crass, outspoken and at times deeply offensive.

But what’s happening in the Philippines right now is far more serious. The drug war has introduced a wave of extrajudicial killings and a climate of lawlessness and fear.

One that has eerie echoes of the days of former president Marcos and the days of martial law.

We’re also going to be hearing about the power of a word when it comes to politics in Burma, a controversial alcohol ban in India, and the vibrant ‘zine scene’ in Java.

We have all that and more coming up on this week’s show.
